Overview

The Neve School of General Jewish Studies (SGJS), the major division of Neve Yerushalayim College, is designed for women who wish to increase their Jewish knowledge, improve their learning skills, and enhance their spiritual growth. For those with a limited Jewish studies background, Neve provides the basic knowledge necessary to lead a true and meaningful Jewish life. For those with a more extensive background, the Neve program affords the opportunity to acquire an in-depth knowledge of Jewish texts, a much greater understanding of the Jewish faith, and the skills necessary for independent Torah study. Students emerge from Neve dedicated to the Jewish people and the land of Israel.

The Neve SGJS program provides students with a wealth of knowledge and resources to enhance their roles as Jewish women in contemporary society. The comprehensive curriculum includes Biblical studies, Jewish philosophy, Jewish law, prayer, Jewish history, and Hebrew language, all of which are presented in an inspiring yet practical way. Courses in morals, ethics, and psychology are directed to the needs of the students as women and Jews.

A key objective of the Neve program is to train students in independent study skills so they can continue to develop and grow after they leave the school. To facilitate this process, the school day is divided into segments that provide for lectures, tutorials, independent preparation, and review sessions. With the guidance of teachers and tutors, students "learn how to learn." They also acquire the skills to pass on to others the knowledge they gained at Neve.

The school's tranquil environment, free from outside pressures, quickens the rate of spiritual growth. Students have the opportunity to strengthen their level of commitment at their own pace and according to their own ability and desire.

Program Structure

The core program of the Neve School of General Jewish Studies is composed of six levels of ascending complexity. Students can enter a level suitable to their background and progress to higher levels as they continue their studies. Also available is a Mechina class for beginners who have little or no background in Jewish studies. Those students who have been graduated from Neve's upper levels, or from equivalent programs in other schools, can attend Shalhevet, an intensive honors program.

The full Neve SGJS program is one academic year, but shorter stays are permitted. With the consent of the Chairman of the school, students may continue their studies for a second year.

Students often choose to spend their vacations at Neve.Summer session are provided on all levels including Mechina and Pre-Shalhevet. For seminary graduates, a Post-Shalhevet summer program is available. In the winter, women may join regular classes where they engage in serious study.

Teachers and Students

Neve classes are taught by leading rabbis and women scholars who are exceptional educators and role models for their students. Along with the ability to make the subject matter exciting and challenging, Neve's teachers spark classroom discussions that stimulate the minds and the hearts of the students.

The school's warm and caring atmosphere is well known. The genuine sense of mutual respect between teachers and students encourages students to inquire, to express their beliefs, and to seek the guidance of their teachers-- not only in academic matters, but in all questions relating to their lives. The strong, enduring relationships that form among students, and between faculty and students, often extend well beyond the time actually spent at Neve.

Rabbi Moshe Chalkowski, Chairman of the School of General Jewish Studies and the Vice Chairman, Rabbi Moshe Weiden, direct the program.
